#1: Safari Warrior

fashionable safari warrior women at Proenza Schouler, Lanvin, Donna Karan, DSquared2 & Hermes
|
When the going gets rough, the tough get decked out. The current unease in the zeitgeist has appeared on the runway as military-inspired looks, albeit with an added layer of glitz, tailoring, and decked out in accessories - most notably the ceremonial British colonial'esque helmuts at Proenza Schouler designed by the South African-born Albertus Swanepoel. This interesting strain of safari-influenced neutrals took a more ladylike turn at Donna Karan and Lanvin, went leather-clad a la Mad Max babe at DSquared, and an oddly glitzy, Studio 54-ready version from Jean Paul Gaultier for Hermes. - Lesley Scott

#2: Tribal Beat
dancin' to the beat of the tribal vibe: Diane Von Furstenberg,
Balmain, Matthew Williamson, Etro & Oscar de la Renta
|
Oscar de la Renta, in particular, incorporated traditional tribal fabrics and patterns in way that the most city-dwelling fashionistas have been lusting after. The trick to rocking this bold version of the season's popular prints is to keep the accessories earthy but eyecatching - try wooden jewelry and tough leather bags & footwear.

#3: Crayola Bright Colors

oh brighten up, already...like Alessandro Dell'Acqua, Valentino, Giambattista Valli, Lanvin, Marni
|
Brights are one of the best things to happen to the tyranny of all-black - take a cue from A-list runways and take the color plunge. Unsure if you've crossed the line from more-is-more to way-too-much? Go the Marni route with neutral accessories and shoes in shades of chocolate, cafe au lait and brown (try: KJL teardrop earrings from MaxAndChloe.com, a ginormous wood cuff by Kara Ross, Banana Republic's Greenwich oversize shoulder bag in the mocha-hued Pebble shade, and uber-chic gladiator flats or the new chunky sandal by Pierre Hardy for Gap).
